UV-cured vs epoxy vs thermoplastic line marking
Most line marking questions come down to one trade-off: how tough the finish is against how long the floor is out of use while it cures. UV-cured, epoxy and thermoplastic sit in very different places on that trade-off, and the right choice depends on where the marking is going and how much downtime you can afford.
UV-cured line marking (RapidShield) cures in about 30 seconds under a UV lamp, so the floor is trafficable almost immediately. Epoxy typically needs 12 to 72 hours to cure fully, during which the area is closed off. Thermoplastic sets in minutes but is applied hot and is mainly an outdoor road and car-park product. For indoor warehouses, cold stores and any site that cannot afford downtime, UV-cured is usually the better fit; thermoplastic remains a strong choice for external tarmac.

UV-cured line marking
UV-cured coatings are liquid until a UV lamp passes over them, at which point they cure in seconds. That instant cure is the whole point: aisles and bays reopen the same visit instead of being closed for a day or more. RapidShield is available in any colour, contains no solvents, isocyanates, odour or VOCs, is NSF approved, and can even be applied in a working freezer down to minus 26 degrees Celsius. Epoxy line marking
Epoxy gives a hard, chemical-resistant finish on a clean, well-prepared internal floor. The catch is cure time: full cure typically takes 12 to 72 hours depending on product, temperature and thickness, so the marked area is out of use during that window. Epoxy also needs dry, above-freezing conditions to cure, which rules out cold stores and slows work in cold weather.
Thermoplastic line marking
Thermoplastic is applied molten and bonds to tarmac as it cools, hardening in roughly 10 to 30 minutes. It is hard-wearing outdoors and is the standard for roads, external car parks and loading yards. It is not suited to smooth internal concrete or cold stores, and application involves heating the material on site.
So which should you choose?
- Indoor warehouse or distribution floor with tight downtime - UV-cured.
- Cold store or freezer - UV-cured (the others will not cure).
- External tarmac road or car park - thermoplastic.
- Internal floor where a long shutdown is acceptable - epoxy is an option.

Is UV line marking as durable as epoxy?
For its intended use, yes. RapidShield UV-cured marking is rated for 5-year vehicle and 10-year footfall durability, while curing in seconds rather than hours. Epoxy can be very hard-wearing on a prepared internal floor, but needs a long cure window that UV-cured avoids. -
Can I use thermoplastic indoors?
It is not the right tool for smooth internal concrete or cold stores. Thermoplastic is designed to bond to tarmac outdoors. For indoor floors, a UV-cured or epoxy system is more appropriate. -
Why does cold-store marking rule out epoxy and paint?
Epoxy and solvent or water-based paints need above-freezing, dry conditions to cure. In a working freezer they will not set. UV-cured RapidShield cures on contact with the UV lamp and can be applied down to minus 26 degrees Celsius.
